Introduction of International Day of Yoga
International Yog Festival 2020 from Sun, 1 Mar, 2020 – Sat, 7 Mar, 2020 at Ganga Resort, Muni Ki Reti (Rishikesh), Uttarakhand is going to be one of the largest yoga events ever organized and is a must see for all yoga lovers from all over the world. International Yog Festival 2020, is being organized by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) & Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB)
International Day of Yoga was inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 & The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on 21 June since 2015 in all over world. Over period of decades the Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice for all which originally originated in India. The Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on 27 September 2014 suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.
The first International Day of Yoga which was celebrated in India as well as all over the world created a record for the largest yoga class, and another for the largest number of participating nationalities.
By many religious community and group in India it has a controversial by criticised it that this Yoga Day celebration was a waste of money, and an attempt by India to promote Hinduism through yoga in World.
“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day”.
Following this initial proposal, the UNGA held informal consultations on the draft resolution, entitled "International Day of Yoga", on 14 October 2014. The consultations were convened by the delegation of India. In 2015 Reserve Bank of India issued a 10 rupees commemorative coin to mark the International Day of Yoga.
On 11 December 2014, India's Permanent Representative Asoke Mukherji introduced the draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly. The draft text received broad support from 177 Member States who sponsored the text, which was adopted without a vote. This initiative found support from many global leaders. A total of 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution, which is the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA resolution of such nature.
The first International Day of Yoga was observed around the world on 21 June 2015. The Ministry of AYUSH made the necessary arrangements in India. 35,985 people, including Narendra Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21 asanas (yoga postures) for 35 minutes at Rajpath in New Delhi, becoming the largest yoga class ever held, and with the largest number of participating nationalities (84 nations). Similar days have been held in cities in India and around the world each year since then.
